Workplace Readiness Initiative

My Best Me – Professional Development

The Workplace Readiness Initiative equips students with the career-ready skills they need to thrive in internships, part-time jobs, and future careers. Delivered directly in schools during the academic day or as part of a school’s College & Career Day, these signature events provide students with practical knowledge and guidance on workplace expectations, professional communication, and employability skills.

During each event, students engage in interactive sessions covering essentials such as email and phone etiquette, workplace basics, and strategies for building strong professional relationships. A highlight of every session is our panel of four professionals, one of whom is always a law enforcement officer, who share insights and real-world examples from their unique career experiences.

Over the past several years, we have successfully delivered this initiative in Illinois and New York, impacting approximately 8,000 students. Through these events, students:

  • Understand employer expectations and workplace norms

  • Build practical professional skills that set them apart

  • Gain exposure to careers across diverse industries through direct engagement with working professionals

  • Strengthen connections between students, guidance counselors, and community resources, including mental health support

  • Foster trust and positive relationships between youth and local law enforcement

Our work is strengthened by community and corporate partners, including:

  • Macy’s

  • ServPro

  • Nicor Gas

  • PACE Bus

  • IL Attorney General’s Office

  • FBI

  • Local PDs

  • St. Joseph Medical Center

  • IL Tollway

  • Walgreens

  • Wintrust Bank

  • Midland States Bank

Partners have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions, from supporting the Professional Attire Stipend, which helps students dress for interviews, to sponsoring entire school events. These collaborations ensure that students not only gain skills but also feel valued and supported by the professionals in their communities.

Classroom Discussion

The Workplace Readiness Initiative is more than a series of events—it is a commitment to preparing the next generation of professionals, equipping them with the confidence, competence, and practical tools they need to succeed in the workforce. Schools, educators, and community leaders are invited to join IMPACT in this transformative initiative and invest in the future of the students they serve.
